In the late 90’s Dan Freene ACS as a young stills assistant, learnt his trade, under the wings of many great Australian photographers, such as James Houston, Skeet Booth, Chris Otto, and Robin Sellick . Dan built up his personal shooting style, and by 2001 Dan Freene ACS was doing his own thing.
Over the past 20 years Dan Freene ACS must have photographed close to 5000 faces, he simply loves portraiture, and is a specialist in finding the best light, and the most flattering angle for any given face.
The art of capturing someones gaze, capturing the essence of that person, in that exact moment, so the viewer feels like they intimately know this human. That is the essential drive that keeps Dan on his path of photographing people.
Dan Freene ACS photographs spaces and places as if they are scenes from a movie… It probably helps that Dan is a multi Award winning ACS accredited Cinematographer, and works with some of the world’s best directors.
Dan is drawn to places that have a feeling of nostalgia, and a rich sense of mood. While most people on holiday put their feet up, Dan can often be seen as that guy with a camera bag full of kit, heading out in a snow storm just before dawn.
Mimi Kelly is a controversial photomedia artist and writer currently completing a PhD by research. Her practice and writing engages with anxieties provoked by, and agency evoked through, the female body as a converged site of the highly aesthetic and that which is somehow other to it – from the uncanny to the grotesque. Her research area focuses on body politics at the intersection of queer theory and third-wave feminism, fashion theory, and theories of the grotesque and perversion.
Dan Freene ACS has been her long time collaborator and photgrapher.
Mimi Kelly and Dan Freene ACS have produced three exhibitions together.
