Dan Freene ACS is an internationally recognised cinematographer working across premium television and feature films, known for crafting emotionally grounded, performance-led imagery through a restrained, naturalistic approach to light.

Most recently, he lensed The Survivors for Tony Ayres, produced with NBCUniversal. Shot in Tasmania and at Docklands Studios Melbourne, the series became a global hit, ranking as the second most-watched TV series worldwide on Netflix in July 2025.

He shot Episodes 5–8 of the Stan series He Had It Coming and all episodes of the hit Netflix comedy Wellmania, starring Celeste Barber. His additional credits include Surviving Summer (Season 2 – Netflix), Queen of Oz - BBC/ABC, Squinters, and Soul Mates for the ABC, along with the Cannes-winning short-form You Tube series Over and Out.

Dan’s feature film credits include OtherLife (2015) and Wasted on the Young (2010).

His documentary work includes Every Little Thing, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, and Skategoat, winner of the Sydney Film Festival Audience Award and nominated for Best Cinematography at the AACTA Awards.

Dan began his career in stills photography in 1999, photographing over 3,000 people. This early focus on portraiture informs his instinct for lighting the human face and working closely with actors to draw out natural, emotionally truthful performances.

His work is defined by a restrained, cinematic naturalism, where light and environment are integral to character and story - supporting performance and revealing the inner lives of his characters.
